Horse racing on the seabed

Once a year, in the small spa town of Cuxhaven Duhnen you can experience the world-famous »horse race on the seabed«. As soon as the tide ebbs the hard-flattened edge of the Wadden Sea draws the first competitors to begin their match. This race is a matter of both money and honor.

By the time the competitors arrive at the finish line both the horses and their jockeys are completely soaked and covered in mud from the North German mudflat. The tradition has been going on for over one hundred years and every time the race has been held on the North Sea's shoreline. It is regarded as on par with the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, and the Husky sledge races in icy Alaska.
