Photography at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hannover
The field of study Photography sees its focus on the »photography of the real life«. This means the photographic examination of the surroundings on the basis of the situational and local reality. Our main focus lies on the personal interpretation of the reality. This always requires to develop of a position towards the object itself and the photography, as a medium.

For this, we are looking for students with an interest in the world. Students who do not think of daily papers as a great wrapping paper for their fish and chips or who do not think that Simon Cowell’s book on Pop Idol is a great piece of literature. Students who are curious to see the world and do not want to spend the rest of their life sitting in front of the computer. Who know that MAGNUM is not just a type of ice cream and that Cartier-Bresson is not the name of a brand for watches. Who are disputatious and are able to dispute. Who think of opportunism as the beginning of the end of each development and who can not just spell loyalty and solidarity. And last but not least, who love photography.
Those are the ones, we educate in content, design and technique of the photography with a special focus on reportages, essays and documentations but also on portrait, architecture and fashion. We offer the most advanced photography department, both in the digital and analogue sector, to our students. Thanks to our sponsor Lumix we dispose of our own gear and, in addition to this, also of numerous rental cameras. The approximately 100 photo students are being supported by one professor, one lecturer and two laboratory assistants. We are located in the former “Global House” on the Expo area. The house is a transparent and modern building with a lot of light coming in.

We think of the study of photography as a unit. The interdisciplinary education in our department is a great accomplishment for us. Knowledge of graphic arts and typography, of design information technology and theory of design are the basics for our funded education. The field of study Photography also teaches the basics of the history of photography, the journalistic writing style, of press and copyright law, of ethics and self promotion. Additional elements in our education are the lecture series “narrative photography”, for which we invite international stars of the photography branch twice a year and our own photo gallery “bauZaun”. It presents the works of our students and gives them a bigger audience. Once a year we also organize a book or exhibition project. One of them is “Europameister” for which 25 students travelled to the new EU states and photographed 25 volunteer mayors during their daily routine.
In their future the students have the opportunity to work in the field of the magazine,- book,- and daily newspaper photography. Further spheres are the photography for public relations, to work as a picture editor for photo agencies, magazines and newspapers, the art buying in the advertisement and the curational work for galleries, trusts and museums.
We are very successful in our work. During the short history of the field of study photography, students from Hannover received numerous awards. Not just in competitions amongst students, also in competitions amongst professionals. The success bases on the perfomance orientated and critical thinking towards photography which we require from each student.
